Recently there has been a huge turnover of volunteers and city employees with a massive amount of combined experience in our city. To a city of our size, this can do considerable damage. Volunteers have a passion for their work and if you don't value their input then you will lose your most fervent and dedicated workers. We need to start respecting and thanking the efforts of volunteers and city employees again and giving credit to those who deserve it.
Since the most recent election, Council has been slowly replacing volunteer committee member spots with members from council. The result is there are less spots for citizens to occupy and the committee becomes a rubber stamp or cheer squad for council's ideas. I propose council remove all council people from committees from which they are not required, and return to a form of government that listens to the people who live in this city. It is good to have people from multiple backgrounds on a committee to provide checks and balances for the system. As our City Charter states "Effective government that protects individual freedom can best be achieved by encouraging and soliciting interest and participation by the citizens."
As a prosecutor, my career was focused on public safety and crime. I have utmost respect for law enforcement and, if elected, plan to work closely with council and NBPD to address issues of crime in our city- ranging from speeding down our thoroughfares to break-ins and violent crime. Also, for years Webster PD agreed to accept arrests from NBPD, but this has recently changed and now our officers must spend time and city funds to transport arrests downtown. With my background, I plan to focus on finding a cost-effective solution to this problem.
Good judgment and competence are important when it comes to ensuring your tax dollars are properly spent and accounted for. I will bring these qualities to council. Since I have entered this race, I have made it a priority to study our budget and spending so I am well prepared to fulfill my duties on day one should I be elected. I will be a good steward of your tax dollars and will see that they are spent in a sensible but forward-thinking manner. We are a community that has a lot of young families and we need to offer a community that attracts families and keeps them here. I'd like to maintain our suburban waterfront community charm by seeing fewer permits granted to gas stations - and bring in more high-end retail/non-chain restaurants.
Part of good government is adhering to our laws, including our City Charter. For example, Charter requires that all directives to city employees come from the City Manager. But lately, it seems, city employees are receiving directives directly from Council-members. This is in violation of the text and spirit of our Charter. We also have at least one active committee that is not even found in our Code of Ordinances, even though required by City Charter. In my view, all City Council meetings and Coffee with the Mayor meetings should be live-streamed. Additionally, an "Ask the Council Member" in person or via zoom during the year to better get to know each of our Council Members and foster open conversation with citizens would also be great.
I've heard repeatedly that my opponent (and those that promote her) say I'm "endorsed by people who continue to promote apartment development and zoning allowing multiple houses on residential lots." This is not at all representative or consistent with my vision for the future of our community. You're hearing it from me- I am not for building more apartments in the city. We have plenty. We need to be concerned for the safety of those inside our existing apartments- and require that those buildings are brought up to code. This requires hiring competent people in our understaffed building department and Council following through with enforcement.
